LISTEN TO MICHELLE’S MIX, INTERVIEW BELOW
WHAT ARE YOU DOING RIGHT NOW?
Right now, I am designing a huge website and some poster artwork for a few club nights here in Glasgow, as well as some single artwork for a soul/jazz musician. Very busy!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PAIR OF UNDERGROUND SHOES?
My very first pair of Underground shoes I actually found in a charity shop. Red suede and leopard print, double soled creepers. I found them for £4! Possibly one of my favourite charity shop finds ever.
WHICH RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
Motorhead Ace of Spades, in 1981. It changed my life the most, as it was the first time I was exposed to ‘alternative’ music. The boy across the road from where I lived brought the album to me, and I listened to it over and over. I couldn’t go back to ‘normal’ music after that.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAVE IF YOUR WARDROBE WAS BURNING DOWN?
So many things! My first ever Balenciaga handbag, my Iris Van Herpen Shoes, my collection of vintage band tees and, of course, my black double sole Underground creepers! I wear them most days, so I can’t really live without those bad boys.
MOST MEMORABLE OUTFIT?
I was nominated for Most Stylish Female at the Scottish Style Awards and Jean Pierre Branganza gave me this incredible black hologram bandage dress to wear on the night. I felt amazing in it.
IDEAL GIG LINEUP, DEAD OR ALIVE.
I’ve been lucky enough to see many amazing bands in my time, so I’d like to see lots of them again, but as they were, back in the day. Sonic Youth, Ramones, Metallica, Sisters of Mercy, The Cramps, Nirvana, Skinny Puppy, Samhain, Buzzcocks, Revolting Cocks, Faster Pussycat (Don’t judge me. Best gig of my 15 year old self. After seeing them, I wanted to grow big boobs so bad, so Greg Steele would marry me). I’d like to throw a bit of electronic music in there too so Red Planet/Underground Resistance.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM UNDERGROUND CREEPER:
In truth, the black suede double sole creeper probably is it already. It works with everything I own. But on a whim, for summer I’d like a pair of neon pink and neon yellow airtex pointed toe double sole creeper, with a silver sole. That would be awesome.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR UNDERGROUND MIXTAPE.
A journey through my youth really, and more recent life. It represents the core of my musical taste, and how it’s never really changed since that Motorhead record in 1981. Those bands bring back amazing memories for me. I can remember seeing lots of those bands play and being massively affected, in a really positive way.
