A Preview of Masked Ball –
A Disco Festival for the Ages
Calling all festival goers, party purveyors and disco dwellers… wave goodbye to the giants of the festival market and say hello to an intimate soiree on the cliffs of the country… cue Masked Ball and their Spring Ball ’19. Taking place on the 3rd to 5th May and located on a cliffside above Cornish fishing village Porthleven, Masked Ball are putting on a small festival like no other. With only a capacity of 3000, the Spring Ball will be an opportunity to embrace living on the edge (quite literally) and partake in a dressed-to-excess themed jolly for one weekend only.
‘The event began as a party by friends for friends, and we’re proud to say we cut the ledges that the tents sit on out of the cliff ourselves, I think that attitude really shines through today.’- Kelvin Batt, Director of Masked Ball Limited
While you may have never heard of this particular festival before, 2019 will in fact be their 12th birthday since the start of the Spring Ball extravaganza. This year they invite ballers to join them for another instalment of an immersive, multi-levelled pageantry that’ll make you live for the weekend. This year’s spectacle promises a full-to-busting line-up of DJs and live acts playing a multitude of “microvenues” that put the overcrowded selection of larger stages at bigger festivals to shame. But that’s not all, the Masked curators have also set up a range of day to night activities such as surf lessons for those willing to brace the cold of the May sea, or paddle boarding sessions for those who don’t dare to dip their toe, as well as yoga classes if you fancy getting zen before a drinking sesh that will no doubt make you unbalanced.
The festival also offers an open door policy which means guests are able to explore the local scenery of Porthleven, grab a Cornish pasty and make it back in time for their favourite DJ. If that’s not enough the Spring Ball is also licenced to keep their bars open for 24hours… giving you practically endless hours of time to get into the party spirit. For 2019 the party gods have blessed festival goers with a hot tub disco too, where you can go and grab a spot in the tub or book a whole one out for you and your friends… or maybe just you, we won’t tell anyone.
When it comes to the music, Spring Ball have disco covered. Breaking out of the ordinary, their line-up is full to the brim with unorthodox acts that make the everyday look so boring you’ll completely forget Monday exists. With the likes of Optiomo, Psychemagik, Francis Inferno Orchestra and Telephone headlining the event, there’s no doubt the weekend will be full of celestial electro and break the mould vocals thrown into the mix. While “house” is a broad range that some might disregard from their musical vocabulary, Underground’s mantra is always forward never back and that’s exactly what these selected musicians are doing… and the festival too.
Pushing the boundaries of partying to its furthest degrees, the Spring Ball will be a rebellion against the ordinary. A shebang which guarantees to shamelessly propagate excess and fast-forward you to the future of festival experiences.
As an independent events company, Masked Ball are the underdogs of the festival scene who shouldn’t be underestimated. Kelvin Batt, director of Masked Ball, claims that ‘the Masked Ball is a proper party in a unique location, nothing more, nothing less.’ With humble beginnings, there’s nothing not appealing about the Spring Weekend, and a festival which puts its guests at the heart of their celebrations because at the end of the day ‘everyone’s there for one reason: to have a good time’.
Underground are lucky enough to be attending this year’s festivities and are itching to get booging with the rest of the masked trouble makers down on the Cornish coast. We will be reporting for those who can’t attend and to give exposure to the festivals who get lost in the shadows on the major ones with the most coverage. It’s time for the underdogs to rise and for the underground knees-ups to get the recognition they deserve.
